Find and Continue Your Old Conversations in Alter
Alter saves your conversations so you can pick up where you left off. Learn how to find, rename, and continue past interactions without starting over.
How History Works
Alter saves your past conversations so you can pick up where you left off. Here’s how to use this feature effectively.
Two ways:
- Click the History button in the interface
- Type
#
in the prompt box for instant access
What Happens Automatically
- Alter names your conversations based on their content
- These names appear when you hover over conversations in history
- This works well enough most of the time, but isn’t perfect
Renaming Conversations That Matter
For conversations you’ll need later:
- Hover over the auto-generated name
- Click it
- Type something you’ll actually remember
- Hit Enter
Favoriting Important Conversations
Another way to keep track of important threads is to favorite them:
- From the conversation window: Look for the star icon next to the conversation name
- From the history list: Hover over a conversation in the history panel and click the star icon that appears on the right.
Favorited conversations are easier to find later, acting as bookmarks for your key interactions.
Continuing Where You Left Off
- Open history (button or
#
) - Type keywords to filter (like “budget” or “code review”)
- Click the conversation you want
- The entire thread reloads with all previous context
- Just start typing to continue
What Carries Over
When you reload a conversation:
- All previous messages are there
- Any files or screenshots you added stay attached
- The AI remembers the previous context
Finding Specific Conversations
The search works with partial keywords:
- Open history
- Type partial or full keywords
- Results are filtered in real-time
Why This Actually Matters
- You don’t waste time repeating yourself
- Complex work stays organized in one thread
- You can build on previous answers instead of starting over
- You can find that helpful response from last week
Things to Remember
- The default naming is hit-or-miss - rename important conversations or favorite
- Search looks at conversation content, not just titles
- Old context stays active when you continue a conversation
- Your history is stored locally on your device
This feature is most useful when you’re working on ongoing projects or need to reference previous solutions Alter has provided.
